Who I Almost Was
Who I Almost Was began after Pedro Filipe Nunes reconnected with a longtime friend—an encounter where, for the first time, both were able to openly share their experiences with depression, grief, and family trauma with someone other than their therapist.
That moment—later recreated in the work Brothers in Arms—revealed to the artist the importance of telling these stories. Not only as a form of personal catharsis, but also as a way to create a place for dialogue around mental health.
In the series, Pedro Filipe Nunes reconstructs scenes from moments in his life where he struggled with his mental health. Friends who have faced similar experiences appear as actors in the photographs, allowing them to contribute their own stories. Through this collaborative process, Who I Almost Was becomes both a personal archive and a shared platform—reminding viewers that vulnerability can foster connection, and that no one is alone in their struggle.
